Dialogue and partnerships

Beyond consultation: on-going stakeholder dialogue and partnerships

On-going dialogue is a central defining feature of successful relations between oil companies and local actors that go far beyond the sporadic, tightly controlled public consultations of conventional impact assessments.

For example, in Venezuela (see Orinoco delta case study and video) Living Earth Foundation’s partner, Fundación Tierra Viva, has implemented community development programmes that have effectively addressed health, education and environmental issues over the long-term through partnerships with industry and numerous actors.

In the Shetland Islands of the North Sea and along the coasts of Scotland, oil companies have been working together with many local partners to ensure that local development and conservation initiatives are continually monitored and adjusted (see North Sea case study and videos)
